What do porn & snickers have in common?

Hello boys and girls! It has definitely been a while since I last wrote anything, but I am working on an article about one crazy night that I haven't experienced in a looooong time! ;) Can't wait to share that with you all soon! :)

For now, I want to repost this article because it's such an interesting read. I also had a lot of moments of realization of things beneath the surface that we should also analyze within ourselves, and existing issues that we should face for the total wellness of our lives.

What I love most about this article is how it taps into each and every one of us, because we all have our own choice of indulgence that could get our lives shaky if not taken into accountability and responsibility. :) Most of all, this article gives us tips on how to live a life of balance and how to find complete fulfillment and satisfaction within ourselves.

Are we becoming a nation of pleasure junkies?

As a nation, we are becoming increasingly indulgent, whether in our consumption of food, sex, alcohol or drugs. At present, 1 in 3 adults are obese and 1 in 10 adults has a substance use (alcohol or drugs) disorder. Not to mention that junk food, alcohol, tobacco, and porn are each multi-billion dollar industries. These bullets are hard to dodge.

Why are we all becoming junkies? Three factors are converging on us. First, our brains naturally drive us to seek out pleasurable experiences. There is no changing that. Second, our stress levels are higher than ever, which weakens our self-control. Third, our environment is presenting an increasing variety and availability of pleasurable options. This represents a lethal combination of forces that are driving pleasure-seeking behavior to unprecedented levels. With primed brains weakened by stress, we succumb in a sea of instant gratification.

The unfortunate consequence is that overindulging in “extreme” pleasure is changing our brains, thereby robbing us of our ability to enjoy aspects of life that are not rocket-fueled. Our desires become increasingly insatiable and our lives increasingly unhappy.

Let's take the porn addict for instance. By frequently seeking extreme forms of sexual stimulation, the porn addict will eventually develop an inability to experience sexual pleasure from normal sexual activity; and if the habit goes long enough, an inability to experience pleasure from anything except porn. This pattern of behavior actually changes the brain’s “baseline” of what turns them on. As you can imagine, serious problems develop. First sexual problems, then relationship problems, and then work problems. Like most addicts, extreme consequences (i.e., the “rock bottom” experience) are often necessary for them to stop the behavior permanently, and then it takes a long time of consistently avoiding the stimuli for the brain to return to normal. Even small episodes of the behavior can rekindle the addiction, which is why abstinence is typically more effective than moderation.

You may think that this is an unusual case but in many ways we have become a nation of "porn" addicts when it comes to food. Junk food is the porn of our diets. The mass production of food that is high in salt, fat, and sugar is resetting our brain’s baseline for what is satisfying. One who consumes a diet high in pizza, Snickers bars, and French fries is eventually going to find natural foods such as fruit, vegetables, and whole grains, bland and unsatisfying in comparison. The landscape of their diet will gradually change in favor of the high-pleasure foods and against natural foods. Even worse, by heavily relying on highly pleasurable food as a way to deal with stress, we risk building an emotional dependence, where nothing in life feels as good as sinking your teeth into a slice of chocolate cake. Essentially we paint ourselves into a pleasure corner that seems impossible to escape.

Everyone has their vice of choice, and the irony is that we belittle others who happened to settle on a different vice, as if we are "above" the same vulnerability. The overeater looks at the porn addict in disgust, while the binge drinker looks at the binge eater in disgust. The truth is the vice itself is inconsequential. The pattern of behavior is what matters. Pleasure seeking is pleasure seeking.

Do I sound like a wet blanket? Anti-porn, anti-Snickers, and anti-booze? None of these activities is all bad, it is when we develop a relationship with life's treats that things go bad. When they become necessary, a "go to", preferred over normal life experiences, and most importantly, when we give them jobs, like stress management, boredom management, or avoidance assistant—that is when things go awry.

How do we find calm and balance in life when around every corner something is waiting to pleasure hijack us? Here are 6 strategies to protect yourself.

What's Your Pleasure? - Know what trips your pleasure system, everyone is different but we are all vulnerable. Some people can live without ever smoking or drinking, but crumble at the sight of fried food. Keep in mind though that it is all too common that successful vice ditchers often unintentionally convert to a brand new vice. Tons of ex-smokers become overeaters, and lots of gastric bypass patients take up gambling or alcohol long after their weight came off. Keep a close eye on forces that may be tugging your sleeve. Been to the casino more lately than ever? Stop.

Distress tolerance – Distress tolerance is your ability to deal with, accept and get through distressing events. I don’t mean distract from them, but to really take the hit, feel it and be able to deal with it. Low distress tolerance can lead to poor self-control when it comes to pleasure-seeking behaviors like overeating because overeating becomes part of your distress coping. On the other hand, poor self-control can lead to reduced distress tolerance because the more you seek pleasures to deal with stress, the more that pattern is reinforced. Eventually you will come to believe that you cannot handle distress without a drink or a binge. Practice experiencing distress without engaging in unhealthy behaviors. If this is difficult, it may be important to seek help to learn new healthy ways to deal with the stress in your life.

Control Availability – At any hour of the day, we can drive up to a window and order a bacon ice cream sundae, a steak and egg sandwich made with pancakes, or a Fried Snickers rolled in powdered sugar. Surely we have parallel examples in the porn world too, pick your fantasy combo. I've used this line before--we are all self control pros on a desert island. Create a personal environment in which you do not feel your self-control is threatened. Think of it this way: If you don’t control what you have access to, what you have access to will control you.

Variety is the Spice of...Trouble – Studies on appetite show that variety is strongly associated with overconsumption. You will eat more at a buffet than you will when meatloaf is the only thing on the table. In neither scenario will you leave hungry but in one you will leave regretful. In other words, avoid the buffets of life. Don’t create one at home and don’t visit them outside of the home.

Find Your Calm – Mindfulness meditation, exercise, knitting, reading, your best friend, the great outdoors…could be anything. Experiment with a variety of natural sources of calm to find the ones that work for you. By having a vast arsenal of healthy calming strategies in your pocket, you avoid becoming enslaved by the unhealthy ones. If you’ve been at the mercy of some powerful but unhealthy “calmers” it may take some time for natural calms to feel like enough.

No Time Like Now- I spent several years working in a smoking cessation program, and smokers who would join but seemed reticent, would often say, “I’m not ready to quit now, maybe I’ll come back in a few months.” The longer your vice holds you captive, the tighter its grip. It will never be easier to quit as it will be today.

First feature for 20-dozen!

Finally! I'm blogging! Well it's more of a photo montage of the night of our shoot for the Y-Star feature/article, "Everybody is Beautiful" by Christopher De Venecia. :) This happened two weeks ago, and the article was published on January 20, Friday. Do check it out, we're featured together with other fabulous youngsters and their take on the body topic. :)

I won't do much blogging today (because I'm lazy and I'm feeling pins and needles on my leg which makes it hard for me to focus) so I'll let all the photos handle that. ;) Our mom gave us both our own Siri/iPhone4S for Christmas that's why we have lots of photos now! We're officially Instagram freaks! YAAAAY!!! :) Follow us both @anastazcia and @danahnasmoothie. :)

Thanks to Azta Urban Salon for our hair color! As for our makeup, I did mine myself, and our mom did Danah's. Thanks, mom! :)

Because body squishing is an action of endearment where we came from :)

The happy and hard-working team behind the shoot! Danah with the stylist, the photographer, and the author of the article.

After the shoot, my sweet sister invited me to dinner at Belinni's since we haven't eaten there, and we just recently saw this restaurant featured on a random local TV show!

Sticks of bread

Forever goofy

Our waiter who can speak Italian fluently. BONGGA!

Their risotto is perfection! Creamy, al dente, and very delicious.

My favorite! Prosciutto and basil pizza

Winin' and dinin' with le awesome twin sistar who paid for everything! :) Wish she did this more often! HEEHEE! :P

Free limoncello after dinner! :) Quite strong (alcoholically speaking), but very yummy. :)

The walls of the restaurant were made alive with beautiful paintings of Italy.

This is the closest I can get to riding a gondola...for now. ;)

We definitely had fun with the shoot and the dinner date! GOOD FOOD + SHOOTS are something we both love and take delight in. :) Christopher, the author of the article who introduced himself as Toffee, was really funny and comfortable to talk to. He had very interesting questions that were never even asked to us before. :) Read his article here.

Bellini's was fantastic--we got to end the night with a delicious and satisfying dinner! We loved the ambiance of the place. You know the food's authentic Italian because the owner was a legit Italian man! :) He was very hospitable and we even asked him for recommendations. He suggested the risotto with red wine, and it was superb. Can't wait to go back with our family (since they haven't eaten there) and have a feast! :)

It was my first time to visit Cubao Expo and I liked the vibe of the place. It was flocked by hipsters and artsy-fartsy people, which made the crowd interesting. I even saw a group of jazz musicians just funkin' out on the street that night! Awesome.

I had a great night all in all. I'm so grateful for our first feature this year! :) And I'm always grateful for bonding sessions with my twin. I've been too busy with work and I missed dinner dates with her!

Date Night

Because I missed my bestfriend who I met waaaaaay back when we were in our mom's womb, I took my twin sister out on a date! :) Dinner at Chili's!

I'll now let the photos do the talking. I had a great time just talking and bonding over good food! It's something that we just love doing together.

No wonder people assume we're Chinese. Haha! :)

We are nacho freaks!

Aye for rib eye!

Yahoo! It's lunch time!

The erratic weather is a huge factor when planning lunch outs, and once it gets rainy, we have no choice but to stay inside our office and order lunch (not really a problem though 'cos our office is cozy and homey :> ). With the fine-dining restos all over the Fort area, it sometimes gets boring to opt for fast food deliveries ALL THE TIME. That's why I'm glad to announce that Angel's Pizza is now expanding their menu with their BREADED CHICKEN BOWL rice meals! :)

Stacy and I were able to try all 3 flavors of the breaded chicken, and here's what we have to say...

1. Chicken with Creamy Sauce: creamy sauce was flavorful, and the corn and carrot bits added texture to it. The Chicken was meaty. It wasn't dry, but it wasn't real juicy either. The chicken meat was tender so it was good to eat.
2. Chicken Parmigiana: this one's my favorite! I'm such a sucker for any hint of Italian. The cheesy sauce (with a bit of tomato sauce) was tasty and not salty. It meshed well with the texture of the chicken. It's definitely sulit (worth it) for 95 bucks!
3. Chicken Teriyaki: Stacy liked the sweet sauce of this flavor, although not really sticking to the authentic Japanese teriyaki sauce, but she says it's good enough for her!

*The rice was a bit malata (sticky), maybe they were in such a rush they weren't able to cool it off. It was still in a level that's OK to eat. :)

My favorite chicken rice bowl! :)

Sharing is caring! :) Stacy with a fellow Yahoo, Aimee. :)

Don't forget to try out these flavorful and affordable chicken rice bowls and taste for yourself! :)

ENJOY YOUR LUNCH TIME!

OoTD: Run Baby, Run + Casa Marcos

My mom kidnapped us last Thursday during lunch break and treated us out to lunch! :) (So there IS such a thing as free lunch! Well, literally.) Now that I'm working, I make sure I revel in eating every second of free meals (or ANYTHING free for that matter) because once I start getting my pay check, I will start paying for my own lunch (goodbye allowance!). Oh mom, I will miss spending your money. :P But kidding aside, I really amd grateful to my mom for giving us far more than we could ever want, and giving us nothing but the best in life. :) I love you mommy puff!

Here's what I wore:

Faux Hawk Fail: I was really going for styling my hair to look like a mohawk, but I didn't have enough time during this morning before going to work to tease the whole mid-section of my hair (and Danah was too lazy to help me) so I ended up with this pompadour hair style. :\ I'm not giving up on achieving a real faux hawk though. ;)

We had lunch at Casa Marcos, which is right in Burgos Circle. We ordered Gambas, Lengua, Callos, Almejas (baked clams), and Tenderloin Tips! (What? We're starving bears.)

Mr. Crumby Crabs! :) Saw this cute edible thing sitting by the counter. It's their pandesal shaped and molded to look like a sea creature! Kaaliw. :D Casa Marcos is also a Pandesal Bar (from 7:00am to 1:00pm), and they make really good Pinoy bread--freshly baked and crunchy on the outside and really soft and chewy on the inside!

IMG01537-20110630-1241
The baked clams, or what they serve as Almejas, was really good--loaded with fried, crunchy garlic and melted cheese!

Their very tender, flavorful, and juicy Tenderloin Tips!

IMG01538-20110630-1241
The Gambas became my instant favorite. It was spicy, oily, and garlic-y! Yuuummmmmmm.

I wasn't able to take photos of the Lengua and the Callos because I was too busy stuffing my face, but I must say, I really enjoyed ALL of their food. Everything was delicious! :) Visit them during lunch time to get a complimentary basket of pandesal served with butter on the side. Mmmmmmmm. :9

Casa Marcos' only branch is located in Burgos Circle, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, Metro Manila. Call them at (632) 703-7784 for queries and reservations. :)

All Day Breakfast Meals (and more!) @ Figaro!

Figaro has expanded their menu once again--and we're here to give our piece on their newly added dishes! :)

Beef Tapa Supreme

Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy Figaro's tapsilog. The only okay (it was just okay, I can't say it was good) part about it were the egg and the garlic rice. The sunny side up was cooked the way I liked it, with the yolk runny after breaking it as I mashed it with the garlic rice.

What was disappointing was the tapa itself, which shouldn't be the case because it's the main star of the whole dish. The upside was, the beef's marinade was very tasty--in fact, it was delicious. But the tenderness--or lack thereof--of the meat massacred the beef, overall. It was very hard to chew, making me put my spoon and fork to rest before I even got to finish the meal.

All in all, I give Figaro's tapsilog a 2/5.

Marinated Boneless Bangus

The fish was marinted lightly, leaving it with a very natural taste. The size is just right for the meal, and it was cooked crispy to a golden brown. I don't usually eat the skin of the Bangus, but this time it's different! It was good! Again, the rice and the sunny-side-up egg were a perfect combination for this dish.

I give their Bangsilog a 4/5 (only because I like my Bangus extra sour and salty from the marinade)!

*All breakfast items are served with their flavorful brewed coffee.

Calzone

Contrary to the first review, I have nothing negative to say about this turnover. I just loved Fiagro's calzone! The dough was baked to perfection--it was very soft and it wasn't too thick or too thin. The meaty filling was mixed with a right amount of cheese--very tasteful and delicious! I added a lot of hot sauce as I devoured the calzone to add that extra kick! YUMMYYYYYYY!

I give Figaro's calzone 5/5!

Truffle Eclair

The whipped cream, the truffle-flavored milk chocolate coating on top (dusted with a bit of cocoa powder), plus the tender bread = A LIGHT AND FLUFFY MUST-TRY DESSERT! Everything complements each other, no part of it overpowered the other one. I liked it!

My rating: 5/5!

Go ahead and try Figaro's latest dishes, and taste for yourself. :)

MEAT IS MURDER. MY TASTY, TASTY MURDER.

I promised myself to lessen the amount of meat I'll be eating this year... So after a good 2-week hiatus from eating my used-to-be staple food, I am so happy I finally indulged on meat dishes that are so WORTH IT.

Goodfellas Steaks and Burgers is one of the newest budding steak restos (and bar) in town. I've heard about it from friends and read about its reviews online, so I've been really wanting to try it. Also, my adorable tutee's dad is one of the co-owners, and they've been inviting me to try their U.S. certified Angus steaks and all-imported meat. Who can say no to that?

SO FINALLY, I WENT! :) YAY!

Photo grabbed from GoodFellas' Facebook page

The restaurant has a Mafia vibe to it; the walls are covered with photos of Italian actors and screenshots from the GodFather, and the waiters wore fedoras and polos with matching suspenders, which was pretty neat! You'll definitely want to smoke a big cigar and put on some shades in this resto's atmosphere. B)

The first thing I tried on the buffet of exquisite food was the Gambino Family, AKA shrimp salpicao (with button mushrooms - P425). I'm a real shrimp freak, and I loved the freshness of this dish, also the spiciness that comes along with it. It wasn't uberly drenched in oil, which is a plus for me. Sooo good!

I'm a really cheesy person, metaphorically and literally. Every time I find Mozzarella sticks on the menu, I just gotta try it! This is GoodFellas' Gotti's Cheese (P365). This is the first time I've seen Mozzarella sticks this long! The breading outside is so crunchy, while the cheese inside is sooo gooey -- a perfect combination! It comes with a salsa dip (the leaves covered it on the photo) that's freshly made.

Their red iced tea is my favorite!!! It's like liquefying red gummy bears and pouring it over a nice, tall glass of ice. YUM!!! Their drinks change daily, so order this one when it's available!

Frenchy (steak fries - P120)

I absolutely loved their fried carbs! The Potato Chips (P120, solo) and french fries were so good and fresh! It was greaseless too! Amazing. It made me wonder how they cooked it. It wasn't salty, but definitely not tasteless. I loved it. It was perfect.

GoodFellas' Caesar salad (P275) is a plate of abundant lettuce, topped with bacon strips, croutons and parmesan cheese with a Caesar dressing they make from scratch.

Looking at this photo makes me wanna order another plate!!! Buffalo wings are my absolute favorite chicken dish, and Goodfellas' Flamingo Wings (P220, solo; P395 to share) are on the top of my list!!! It was perfectly tangy (also, not soggy) and spicy (tolerable, so you can try it too, if you're not into the hot side) -- 2 factors I look for to consider it really, really good.

Now on to the meaty part...

Goodfellas' House Steak (P345) is a slab of 1/4 kilo of meat that's charred on the outside but tender on the inside. The mashed potato on the side was so creamy and fluffy! It comes with 2 sauces, one balsamic vinegar and one gravy. The meat was aged, and the flavor was a li'l sharp. Nonetheless, you get more than what you pay for on this dish!

The Margherita Burger (P220 solo; P275 meal) is one of the dishes that made my meaty night extra awesome. The meat was light on the flavor, so adding a bit of ketchup and mustard would be great. The cheese, tomato and the pesto sauce on top of the 100g patty is to die for! The oat bun is really, really good too, very soft and chewy. I'd recommend this one hundred percent!

Pat and Geno's (P220 solo, P270 combo) is GoodFellas' version of the very famous Philly cheese steak sandwich. The melted cheese, caramelized onions and very tender slices of meat ultimately makes this one a must-try! I like that they used ciabatta for the bread, and it's one of my most favorite Italian breads of all time.

This is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE AMONG THEIR STEAK FAMILY! Santino's (P975, 8-10 ounces) is a U.S. Cab Prime Rib steak that's very tender, and marbled with enough fat to tickle your taste buds. The softness of the meat was so perfect that I just had to cut myself more of that juicy goodness! The fat melts in your mouth, which makes extraordinarily delicious.

Michael's Prime (P995) is a bigger version of Santino's. It wasn't as tender nor marbled with fat, but it was just as flavorful.

Make lunch time extra fancy with GoodFellas' Shotgun lunch menu! It's available Monday to Friday, from 11AM to 3PM.

I was only able to try Sammy "the bull" Gravano (185) because I was too full, but I was definitely satisfied with the Hungarian sausage's spiciness, flavor and crunch! It may a bit too spicy for some, but you can tone down the hotness with the yummy rice pilaf that goes so well with it.
*All lunch dishes come with rice or mashed potato, a serving of buttered veggies and refillable iced tea.

On top of all that, what I truly liked the most about the resto is the cozy vibe, the sophisticated interior and the friendly atmosphere (they even allowed me to plug in my i-pod to enjoy my own music)! They let their customers wear fedoras and pose with shotguns for that unique gangster experience! OH, WHAT JOY! :)

Don't you just love the how the light gleamed on my huge gun? :>

Do check out GoodFellas' Facebook page and have yourself a maestoso time, the Mafia way!
